British Virgin Islands

About the British Virgin Islands

While still British owned territory, the British Virgin Islands govern themselves. The islands (6 inhabited and more than 43 uninhabited) are located east of the US Virgin Islands. Called the BVIs by locals and those in the know, the islands are a bit expensive to explore, but if you like the ocean and boats and the Caribbean in general, chances are high that you're going to fall in love with the British Virgin Islands.

The main regions of the BVIs consist of Jost Van Dyke, Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Anegada. Some people enjoy taking mini-voyages to all of the islands - a great big tour. Whatever you decide, these islands are a great place to see the Caribbean up close and personal. Because the economy of the British Virgin Islands is one of the best in the entire Caribbean, prices can be a bit more expensive that other places in the area. That said, the money is worth it as the natural beauty and man-made wonders are wonderful to behold.

Besides just looking, there are many things to do while you're in the BVIs.

  • Sailing - Sometimes just sailing around the BVIs - either on your own or as part of a guided tour - can be the best way to experience the British Virgin Islands.
  • Fishing - Fishing is big all around the islands. If you want to try your hand, you're going to have many different options. If you have the time, you may try going after different types of fish on each of your fishing excursions.
  • Scuba Diving - If you want to explore the depths of the ocean - or at least the shallow depths - the British Virgin Islands offer many different locations that are perfect for scuba diving - whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro with underwater camera equipment.
  • Surfing (and Windsurfing) - The islands offer many great spots for traditional surfing as well as windsurfing. There are also many competitions and events centered around the surfer culture if that interests you.
  • Shopping - While not primarily known for shopping, some of the islands do offer good places to pick up little reminders of your trip to the BVIs. You'll want to check around once you're in the area to make sure you get the best prices, but there are many deals to be had.
  • Eating and Drinking - Rum is once again the local favorite drink. And as for food, if you like seafood, you're in luck and are going to feast every night. Even if you don't care for seafood or want to spice it up a little, there are other local dishes you can try as well as more traditional restaurants with traditional cuisine.

As you can see, there's plenty for you to do once you arrive on the British Virgin Islands. The tough choice is going to be deciding what activities you want to try once you get there. If there's any way you can get an extra day or two in the area, you might as well go ahead and set it up before you leave. After seeing the BVIs for the first time, you're going to want to stay to explore every nook and cranny, which takes time. If you can afford the money and time - try adding a few extra days to your trip to the British Virgin Islands. You won't be disappointed.
